Taxes
Posted by JamiJDeVries on June 29, 2022 at 6:51 pmI asked my tax professional but wanted to get other experienced surrogates’ insights too. Do surrogates claim the money they were paid through their contracts come tax time?

I can’t remember the reasoning, but the surrogacy coordinator at my agency said that I shouldn’t have to claim it on my taxes. I’ve seen conflicting answers though, so I also plan to check with my tax professional when I file next year. I didn’t claim any of my surrogacy related reimbursed expenses in 2021 though, but we also hadn’t achieved a viable pregnancy by that point yet.

I think every surrogate is different, but I did not claim by surrogacy compensation on my taxes 2 years ago and I was told that was fine since surrogacy is not regulated in my state, the decision is left up to the surrogate.

I was going to see if I got a form in the mail at tax time when it’s time to file and if I don’t, then I wasn’t going to claim it.
