Time from match to embryo transfer?
Posted by Alli on August 29, 2022 at 2:47 pmHow long did this take for you? Did you find any unexpected bottlenecks?

Oh goodness, let’s see! For my first journey, we matched in February 2020 but didn’t do transfer until July because of Covid. For the second journey, we matched in September 2021 ish and had our first transfer March 2022. It can take such a long time. I would say that I would budget 2-3 weeks for the surrogate’s obgyn to transfer the paperwork to the clinic. Then another 2-3 weeks for the clinic to review the medical history. Then wait another 2 weeks for the medical clearance appointment. Then wait 2 weeks to hear back about the blood results. Then starting legal clearance – 6/8 weeks for that. During the legal clearance, perhaps she can start taking BC. I would say Embryo transfer could take place a couple weeks after contracts are signed. Whew – it’s a roller coaster ride!

If it takes less time than that – which it might – i would consider it a blessing 🙂

We matched in June 2018 and did the first transfer in November 2018. We were with an agency and it was surrogate’s second journey so I think we already had a lot done as far as medical clearance and background checks, etc. at the time of being matched (but I can’t remember)? My surrogate and I were very on top of it with legal, clinics, etc. and it can still just take awhile to get everything lined up. It can definitely seem like waiting on top of waiting on top of waiting…best wishes to you!

We met our surrogate outside of an agency, but then officially matched through her agency to have them manage our journey. So I would say we “matched” in August 2021, started the contract process in January 2022 (we delayed contracts because we had to undergo a second round of IVF), officially finished legal in early March and did our first transfer in May. Contracts took longer than I thought they would – lots of back and forth between legal teams and the agency. And then our first transfer unfortunately failed with our only euploid embryo, so we had to do another round of IVF before our second transfer. All of these things added to our timeline.

For us it was 7 months from match to first transfer. Our RE is overbooked so it was just a lot of waiting in general for no particular reason.
I miscarried at 12 weeks and had a lot of complications that took many appointments and time to recover from so that put things on hold for several months before we could try again. I’m guessing that counts as a bottleneck? And then after two failed transfers, I asked for a break for several months before trying again.
We have been matched for almost 2 years now and are doing our fourth transfer this week.

I was definitely one of the blessed ones, we matched in August and transferred in November. It was super quick and easy, and we went through an agency. So, it can be done! lol But is definitely not the norm.
It was definitely not quick on the IP’s side though. They had a match fall through the beginning of the year and then they found me a few months later.
